Stump Grinding in Greenville, SC

That stump you've been mowing around for years? Gone in an afternoon β€” ground below grade, chips raked, ready for sod or a new planting. Fresh cuts and decades-old stumps alike.

Why bother with a stump?

A stump isn't just an eyesore you mow around. In the Upstate's warm, humid climate it becomes three problems on a schedule: termites and carpenter ants treat rotting stumps as a staging ground uncomfortably close to your house; fungus (including armillaria root rot, which can spread to healthy trees and shrubs nearby) colonizes the dying roots; and regrowth β€” sweetgums, Bradford pears, and crape myrtles famously refuse to die, sending up thickets of suckers for years. Grinding ends all three.

What stump grinding costs in Greenville

Job typeTypical price
Small stump (under 12" diameter)$100 – $200
Medium stump (12–24")$150 – $350
Large stump (24–40"+ β€” mature oak or pine)$300 – $600+
Added to a tree removal (equipment's already there)+$100 – $400
Multiple stumpsPriced per job β€” always cheaper than one-at-a-time

Measure at the widest point of the stump, ground level, including any flare. Surface roots that run across the lawn can be chased and ground too β€” worth mentioning when you call.

Grinding vs. full stump removal

Grinding takes the stump 6–12 inches below grade and leaves the deep roots to decay naturally β€” right for 95% of Greenville yards, and what the prices above describe. Full excavation (digging the entire root ball out) is construction work: necessary when a slab, pool, or addition is going exactly there, and priced accordingly. If you're not building on the spot, grinding is the answer β€” after backfilling, you can re-sod or replant right over it. One tip: don't plant a new tree in the exact grind hole; the decaying old roots and chip-heavy soil starve it of nitrogen. Offset the new tree a few feet.

What the job looks like

  1. Utility check. Grinders dig β€” irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting, buried cable and gas lines get located first. SC811 marking is free and we handle the call when it's needed.
  2. Grind. A tracked grinder walks through a 36-inch gate, so fenced Greenville backyards are rarely a problem. The wheel chews the stump into a mound of chips below grade.
  3. Cleanup. Chips can backfill the hole (they settle over a season), or we haul them and backfill with soil so it's sod-ready immediately β€” your call, priced clearly either way.

Have a stump from an old removal?

About half our grinding calls are for stumps someone else left behind β€” a removal from years ago where grinding felt like an easy $200 saving at the time. No judgment; it's the most commonly skipped line item in tree work. We grind orphan stumps as their own job, no matter who cut the tree. And if you're planning a removal now, add the grind while the crew's on site β€” it's meaningfully cheaper than a separate visit later.
